This piece is a response to critics of Duchamp’s Étant donnés insisting that the scene isn’t a place of violation or danger. I am connecting the idea of safe spaces, who gets to define those, and what it means when the viewer’s gaze is forced to peep. With this work, I use traditionally feminine materials, demanding that the viewer sense their role in a potential violation when they choose to peep.
Vintage zippers, wooden spool, peephole, label tape, wood, paper, pins, thimble, ribbon, light.
30” x 16” x 7”
2022

Interior view, as seen through the peep hole.
